Random sketches

Travelling to and from university gives me a lot of idle time that sometimes I like to fill with drawing. Although drawing on a moving bus isn't ideal I like to rough out the drawings during that time and then I come back to clean them up later. You know, when I'm not prone to sudden arm jerks caused by a rapidly turning bus. Enjoy.

Two posts in one day. That's just (gasping for air) exhausting.

Lightsabers!

I logged on to Blogger as I do nearly everyday but today something was different. There was a comment that was not there before! I quickly scrambled to the comment page to find that the amazing artist Eric Scales had asked me, "Where are you Michael?". This was just the kick in the pants that I needed to post once again.

The following image is something I recently completed in my Computer Aided Design class. The assessment required us to design a torch and render it as realistically as possible. In typical Michael-fashion I didn't want to do that so I asked my tutor if I could model a lightsaber instead. Of course I chose none other than Mr Samuel L. "One Bad Ass Motherf***er" Jackson's (That's a Pulp Fiction reference for those of you playing at home). I'm pretty happy with the end result but I'm more interested in what 'you' the readers (or reader) think.

Machine Drawings

Part of the course I'm studying required me to practice my freehand drawing skills by sketching the machinery in our workshop. We were allowed to be as expressive as we wanted so I decided to go a little crazy.

This first one is a large wooden lathe. Don't ask me what I was smoking the day I did this and no prizes for guessing which is the one I drew. Just to clarify it was the right one ... Let's read on.

This second one is a drop saw. I tried to give it a more comic stylised look with the thick black lines with an emphasis on 'tried'.

Sound off with your comments below.

Caricature

Well it's been a very, very, very, very long time. I have a few things I have been thinking of posting but for now here's a caricature my extremely talented friend did of yours truly as a Charles Dickens character. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

I hope my long overdue post encourages some of you to post more often (I'm looking at you Ashley Barton over at Cartoonimation).

More Character Designs

I know I've pretty slack lately in terms of posting so I'm leaving you guys a couple more treats. These two characters are based very, very loosely based on my teachers that I have for one of my uni classes.

Once again leave any comments or criticism. It's great to know someone's passing by.

Character sheets

Hey guys it's me again. Rather than random doodling I decided I'd actually come up with some character designs that I liked and experiment. The first guy I was going for a Russian bodybuilder while his unusual body shape is influenced by the style of Al Hirschfeld (thank you Aladdin dvd). The second is a rather comical frenchman.

Once again I'm sorry if it's a bit hard to see but i wanted to retain the sketchiness of the original drawings. Let me know what you guys think.

This is Captain Shell, signing out.

Miscellaneous Characters

After a brief two year hiatus I have decided to start drawing regularly again. Sorry if it's hard to see. Let me know what you think.

In unrelated news I now have ONE follower. Hooray for me! I'm so lonely.

The Princess and the Frog

Like most avid Disney fans I'm looking forward to this years release of The Princess and the Frog. That's why I've been scrambling the internet like a maniac for some amazing production art.

Rather than posting a whole lot i decided to just pick one of the best. Enjoy.
